A most interesting talk by Professor Emeritus, Dr. John Dunn on “The Psychology of Elite Performance”. Dr. Dunn, recently retired, had a long career in training for elite performance, both in sports and in the military. There are common traits amongst elite individuals that Dr. Dunn shared with the Rotarians today. These tips are not only beneficial to elite performance but are helpful to have a balanced healthy lifestyle. Read on……
Some of Dr. Dunn's tips to achieve elite performance, or simply to lead a balanced healthy lifestyle:
- Remember, “It’s what you do, it isn’t who you are”.
- Focus on “What’s Important Now” Or W.I.N. Focus on the important items in the moment, in the here and now. These are the things you can influence to get a different outcome.
- Focus on the solution, as opposed of dwelling on the problem.
- Repetition, repetition, repetition – leads to perfection, in any task.
- Cognitive restructuring. A technique used to shift a person’s mindset whereby they look at situations, circumstances or experiences from a different, more beneficial, perspective.
- Normalize the stress response
- Control the Controllable (because everything else is wasted time).
