Club Update - February 13, 2014

Concordia University students and New Asian Village are interested in hosting a Murder Mystery fundraiser in support of our club. Suggested date is Tuesday, April 8.

 

Are you able to help coordinate this event?  Roman is looking for someone to help organize this fundraising opportunity as he will be away for a few weeks leading up to the date.  New Asian Village will do a buffet dinner for a reasonable cost and the students will be in character to create a fun filled evening of suspense and murder.

 

We need a commitment.  Can you help?  If so, please let Roman know A.S.A.P.  If not, we may have to postpone for the fall due to the timing.

Our projects to date have been the following:

 

$1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a Norquest student.

 

Nursing students, as part of practicum, go to Africa for two weeks.  Our club supports 12 students at $200 each.  Last year the students went to Ghana.

 

$2,000 was sent to support Humanitarian Aide through the Red Cross for the Philippines.  The Canadian government matched this donation. 

 

S.E.E.D.S.

S.E.E.D.S. is a Canadian Charity based in Edmonton that provides services to impoverished children and families in Ethiopia.  The focus is helping 410 children attend school by covering costs for school fees, uniforms, health needs and school supplies.  Riverview Rotary Club is working on supporting this group to help get toilets and running water to the school.

 

Uganda has very few doctors.  For example, there are only 6 dentists in Uganda and they have a population of 2.5 million people.  A hospital formed and provides services to the people of Uganda.  There is unfortunately no running water at this time and our club is looking at supporting this advancement to the infrastructure of the hospital.

Thank goodness for people who know numbers!

International dues and district dues need to be paid yearly.  There are costs to the club while doing business such as: district training, storage, guest meal, executive meetings etc.

Largest charge to a member is the cost of the breakfast.  Members are required to pay this cost regardless of attendance.

We have numerous fundraisers every year to fund our projects as well as a casino.  Casino funds are restricted and must apply to use them in specific ways.

Discussions with the Board about use/investment of the Allendale Bingo share funds.

Changes will be made for the 2014-15 Rotary year for the set-up and take down crews [starting July 2014].  Each team will be given 3 months of the calendar year moving forward.  It is the hope that the teams will have more people to draw on the support this activity.  Please watch for more details.
