Who would have thought that a presentation about water treatment would be interesting? Vicki Campbell, P. Eng., Director of Water Treatment Plants for EPCOR, enlightened club members about the complexity and risks to Edmonton's water treatment facilities. The two treatment facilities, the E.L. Smith and Rossdale plants provide 375 million litres of water per day to Edmonton plus an additional 90 surrounding communities, with a combined population of over 1.5 million people. EPCOR assessed the risk posed to the facilities due to floods and has developed and is implementing a plan to protect these critical facilities. Thanks for a great job helping to ensure that we all have good, safe, drinking water.
A major flood would impact EPCOR's ability to provide clean drinking water. Critical electrical infrastructure, chemical storage facilities and reservoirs would be damaged. Without mitigation, water treatment plants would be inoperable for up to 10 months. Water would need to be trucked to regional customers and a boil water advisory would be in place. The mitigation project will add berms, barrier walls and will modify underground utilities with back-flow and flood valves. The project is on track to be completed in 2027. Great job helping to ensure that we all have good, safe, drinking water.
