Christy Morin, Executive Director of Arts on the Avenue, joined our meeting to tell the story of her organization serving the 118 Ave. community. She moved to the avenue in 1994 with her husband and was overwhelmed by the social disorder in the area. Overtime, she and other artists banded together to create an organization to “edify the community through the arts.” Today, the organization sponsors three major programs. The Carrot Community Arts Coffee House is a meeting place for community members and a venue sponsoring many kinds of programming. The Kaleido Family Arts Festival is held in September including as many as 40,000 participants. Each winter Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival celebrates Francophone, Indigenous, Inuit and Ukrainian cultures. Christy was quick to recognize the work of 2100 unique volunteers who support these and other programs. She was joined by Jan Preece, a board member and Edwin Aquino, manager of the coffee house.
