Ian Hall never expected to be leading an organization to help military veterans. It came somewhat from chance but also need. Ian served for six years in the Canadian armed forces, followed by five years in EMS and has now been with Edmonton Fire Rescue for 17 years.  Ian stayed in close contact with comrades from his armed forces days but, over time, noticed a sad trend. Many people who had served in the military were suffering from alcohol and/or drug abuse, divorces and unfortunately not uncommon, suicide.  He came up with the idea of "going for a walk" with his old buddies. The time walking (or marching) provides opportunity to talk, reflect and heal.  The "Rucksack March for Remembrance" started in 2018 with 30 participants and raised $5,000. What started in Edmonton now occurs in many cities and towns in Canada. This year's event raised over $100,000.  The funds used by the Wounded Warriors  Canada. Ian has been a volunteer ambassador for 5 years with Wounded Warriors Canada.

The Wounded Warrior Canada is a national mental health provider dedicated to serving ill and injured "Trauma Exposed Professionals".  These are individuals who, through the course of their regular job duties, are continually exposed to traumatic events involving actual or threatened death, serious injury, and/or sexual violence. In addition of members of the military, individuals may be police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, corrections officers, security officers and health care workers. Service programs include both the individual and their families in dealing with post-trauma injuries.

Great work Ian. Thanks for sharing some of your time with club members.
