Today, October 24, 2025, on World Polio Day, we pause to reflect on the immense progress made in the fight to eradicate this disease—a fight championed by Rotarians around the globe. This day is a powerful reminder of what dedicated global partnership can achieve.
It is in this spirit of inspiring action that we want to highlight one of our keynote speakers for the 2026 Rotary District Conference in Whitehorse: Michael Sheldrick!
The Architect of “The End of Polio”
Michael Sheldrick is an Australian author, policy entrepreneur, and the Co-Founder and Chief Policy, Impact, and Government Affairs Officer at Global Citizen. Global Citizen is an international advocacy organization that leverages popular culture to mobilize public support and secure commitments from world leaders, businesses, and philanthropists to address global challenges like extreme poverty, global health, and climate change.
Sheldrick is no stranger to supporting efforts to eradicate polio. He was one of the co-founders who spearheaded Global Citizen's first major advocacy campaign, "The End of Polio," in 2011, which raised $118 million. His advocacy, in partnership with Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was instrumental in mobilizing world leaders to commit hundreds of millions of dollars to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). He effectively demonstrated how popular culture and citizen action could translate into real-world policy change, earning him a Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary in 2012 for his efforts.
His ongoing collaboration with Rotary International and other global health organizations highlights his sustained commitment to this cause.
Global Impact in 2026 and Beyond
The journey to end polio has provided a universal playbook for tackling systemic global challenges, such as extreme poverty. Over the past decade, Global Citizen’s campaigns have led to over $35 billion distributed to anti-poverty efforts around the world.
