October brings with it a powerful reminder of the difference we can make when we focus on Economic and Community Development—one of Rotary’s Seven Areas of Focus. Across District 5370, I see clubs working tirelessly to strengthen communities by empowering local entrepreneurs, supporting education and job training, and creating opportunities that lead to sustainable change. When we invest in people and their communities, we are investing in hope, dignity, and long-term growth.
One outstanding example of this commitment is the Rotary Employment Partnership with Inclusion Alberta, a collaborative initiative that creates meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. This partnership is a testament to Rotary’s values of equity and inclusion, proving that when we come together, we not only help individuals find work, but also strengthen businesses and build more vibrant communities.
This month also carries special significance as we approach World Polio Day on October 24th. Rotary’s commitment to ending polio remains unwavering, and our collective actions continue to bring us closer to the day when no child will face this preventable disease. I encourage every club to take part in raising awareness, planning events, and renewing their commitment to the End Polio Now campaign. Together, we have reduced polio cases by more than 99% worldwide—our job is not finished, but our impact has been historic.
How your club can make an impact this October:
• Plan meetings and projects centered on sustainable community development.
• Support and promote inclusive employment opportunities, such as the Rotary Employment Partnership.
• Highlight and recognize members who champion Rotary’s mission of service.
• Organize a World Polio Day event, fundraiser, or awareness campaign.
• Share your club’s successes and stories to inspire others across our District.
