The Central VA CSTA Chapter was established in 2010.  

 

The mission of the Central VA CSTA Chapter is to further the mission of the CSTA and promote the teaching of computer science and other computing disciplines in Virginia. It provides opportunities for K-12 teachers and students to better understand computing disciplines and to more successfully prepare themselves to teach and learn.

 

Our goal is to share best practices in teaching computer science, create an inclusive community to promote diversity in our classrooms and outreach programs, and to collaborate together to maintain an active teaching community.

 

 

Year-Round Professional Learning

      We offer a variety of computer science professional learning courses for current Virginia public school K-12 educators and other interested public school education professionals at no cost. We focus on deep content knowledge and CS teaching strategies delivered in innovative and useful ways. Our professional learning courses use our own internally developed curriculum and curriculum from outside partners. Computer science may be new to some schools, but to us it’s an established learning tool.   

 

CodeVA publishes free, Creative Commons licensed curricular materials on the #GoOpenVA open education resource (OER). This includes K-12 computer science focused lesson plans, lesson sequences, units, integration resources, and learner-operated tool-based tutorials. The CS Ready program is intended to strategically prepare schools for school wide implementation of computer science education. Through this partnership with Amazon Future Engineer, professional learning will be available for over 12,000 teachers across Virginia.
