About CSTA Central Virginia

The Central VA CSTA Chapter was established in 2010.

The mission of the Central VA CSTA Chapter is to further the mission of the CSTA and promote the teaching of computer science and other computing disciplines in Virginia. It provides opportunities for K-12 teachers and students to better understand computing disciplines and to more successfully prepare themselves to teach and learn.

Our goal is to share best practices in teaching computer science, create an inclusive community to promote diversity in our classrooms and outreach programs, and to collaborate together to maintain an active teaching community.

CodeVA is a non-profit that partners with schools, parents, and communities to bring equitable computer science education to all of Virginia's students.

Year-Round Professional Learning

We offer a variety of computer science professional learning courses for current Virginia public school K-12 educators and other interested public school education professionals at no cost. We focus on deep content knowledge and CS teaching strategies delivered in innovative and useful ways. Our professional learning courses use our own internally developed curriculum and curriculum from outside partners. Computer science may be new to some schools, but to us itโ€™s an established learning tool.

Free Curricular Resources

CodeVA publishes free, Creative Commons licensed curricular materials on the #GoOpenVA open education resource (OER). This includes K-12 computer science focused lesson plans, lesson sequences, units, integration resources, and learner-operated tool-based tutorials. Please use, tweak, and remix our work, and let us know how it goes at curriculum@codevirginia.org Got ideas for new curricula, or interested in a position writing with us? Please reach out!

Is your school CS Ready?

The CS Ready program is intended to strategically prepare schools for school wide implementation of computer science education. Through this partnership with Amazon Future Engineer, professional learning will be available for over 12,000 teachers across Virginia.

CS Educator of the Year

Every year CodeVA recognizes an outstanding computer science educator from the state of Virginia at Computer Science Education Week. This year, we will be recognizing not just one, but six educators! If you know an outstanding K-12 ITRT/Coach/support personnel, administrator or Pre-K-12th grade educator who goes above and beyond with CS, we want to hear from you!
